The RAL color system is Europe's most widely used color standard, developed in Germany in 1927. RAL Classic contains 221 precisely defined colors organized into 9 series by hue: yellows & beiges (1000), oranges (2000), reds (3000), violets (4000), blues (5000), greens (6000), greys (7000), browns (8000), and whites & blacks (9000). RAL Design System+ extends this with 1,134 scientific colors organized along three perceptual axes — Hue, Lightness, and Chroma — with codes like RAL D2 010 40 30. RAL Classic colors are numbered 1000–9023. The first digit indicates the hue group: 1=yellows/beiges, 2=oranges, 3=reds, 4=violets, 5=blues, 6=greens, 7=greys, 8=browns, 9=whites & blacks. Each series contains between 13 and 33 colors.
RAL Design System+ codes (RAL D2 HHH LL CC) encode three attributes: Hue angle (010–360°), Lightness (10–95%), and Chroma (00–40). A code of RAL D2 190 40 30 means a blue hue (190°), 40% lightness, and 30 units of chroma. Achromatic colors use code 000 with zero chroma.
Screen colors emit RGB light (additive color), while RAL paints reflect light as physical pigments (subtractive color). HEX values shown are digital approximations only. For accurate color matching in production, always verify with physical RAL color samples or a RAL color fan.
RAL is used in construction (facades, windows, doors), architecture (interior finishes), automotive (body paints), industrial equipment (machinery, pipelines), signage (road signs, safety markings), and product design (appliances, electronics enclosures).
